The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel
The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel
In the small town of Klingenberg, Germany, during the 1970s, Anneliese Michel, a devout Catholic teenager, began experiencing terrifying and unexplained symptoms. Raised in a religious household, she started showing signs of severe mental and physical distress at the age of 16. Initially diagnosed with epilepsy, Anneliese claimed to see demonic faces during her daily activities and began hearing disturbing voices. Despite medical treatment, her condition worsened, and her family became convinced that something far more sinister was at play.
By 1973, her behavior had grown increasingly bizarre and frightening. She refused to touch religious objects like crucifixes, drank her own urine, and began speaking in tongues or making guttural noises. Anneliese’s family believed she was possessed by demons, and after repeated requests, two priests were finally authorized by the Church to perform an exorcism.
Over the course of 10 months in 1975 and 1976, Anneliese endured 67 exorcism sessions. During these grueling rituals, she claimed to be possessed by several demonic entities, including Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, and Cain. She screamed, convulsed, and spoke in different voices, each supposedly representing a different demon. Throughout this time, Anneliese refused food and water, claiming that the demons would not allow her to eat. As her physical condition deteriorated, she grew emaciated, weakened, and more disturbed.
By July 1, 1976, at the age of 23, Anneliese Michel tragically passed away from malnutrition and dehydration. Her parents and the two priests involved in the exorcism were later charged with negligent homicide. During the trial, recordings from the exorcisms were played in court, revealing chilling audio of Anneliese’s tormented voice, crying out for help and pleading to be freed from the entities within her.
The case divided opinions worldwide, with some believing she was a victim of mental illness, while others claimed she was genuinely possessed. The horrifying story of Anneliese Michel became the basis for the 2005 horror film The Exorcism of Emily Rose, forever cementing her tragic ordeal as one of the most terrifying and controversial exorcism cases in modern history.
